PSY/315 TEAM ASSIGNMENT FOR STATISTICS
You will be testing the sleep quality ratings of adults who have smoked at least one pack of cigarettes per day for over one year vs the sleep quality ratings of non-smokers. In your report, discuss whether the non-smokers have always been non-smokers or whether they are former smokers who are now non-smokers and have been non-smokers for at least one year.
You will be drawing two independent samples: one from the population of adults who smoke and one sample from the population of adults who do not smoke. You will evaluate the sleep quality ratings of each participant in each sample via an independent samples “t” test and compare the mean of each sample for significance: two samples; two means – one for each sample.
Note: Use the fictitious “Comprehensive Sleep Quality Rating Scale for Adults” to rate each participant’s quality of sleep. Keep in mind that this Sleep Quality Scale is not real; it’s made up for the purpose of this study, but you should discuss the Scale as if were real and as if you actually collected data from the participants. Be as realistic as possible in reporting your procedures and data collection methods.
Pay particular attention to the information on the “t” test for independent means in Chapter 9 of your text – it relates directly to your hypothesis test.
Attached, you will find the data set that accompanies your hypothesis. Your job will be to apply the formula(s) in Chapter 9 of your text to the data, interpret your results, and write your paper. The numbers in the Smoke column are the sleep quality ratings of the participants who smoke. The numbers in the Non Smoke column are the sleep quality ratings of the participants who do not smoke. Higher numbers indicate greater quality of sleep. Max score is 20.
Note: You will be using a two tailed test at .05 significance level to test your hypothesis.
Your hypothesis is stated below. This statement should appear in your paper as the last sentence of the opening section of your paper just before the Method section. See the Graphical Model posted in “Class Messages” on the Home tab for an illustration of how your paper should look when finished.
(Use the statement below in your paper)
Sleep quality ratings of adults who smoke at least one pack of cigarettes per day differs from the sleep quality ratings of adults who do not smoke.
I ONLY NEED THIS PORTION:
Formulate a hypothesis statement concerning your selected research issue, problem, or opportunity.
